How to Help Your Dog with Dry Paws
With winter coming, it’s time to make sure our furry little friends are comfortable in the cooler weather. One of the issues your dog may face in the cool and dry weather is dry paws which can cause cracks and discomfort.
Some of the most common reasons for dry paws are hot pavement, wintery conditions, chemicals on the ground (e.g. fertilizer on your lawn or household cleaners on your carpet), and allergic reactions to the environment. If your pup is suffering from dry cracked paws, consider some of the following remedies:
- Shoes: Dogs’ paws go through quite a bit of wear and tear on a daily basis. Consider investing in some doggie shoes for your pet. Shoes can protect your dog’s feet in harsher conditions.
- Coconut Oil or Shea Butter: Coconut oil and shea butter are known for their moisturizing qualities and are great homemade remedies for dry paws. They are non-toxic solutions and won’t hurt your dog even if they start to lick it off their paws!
- Hydration: It’s important for your pup to stay hydrated throughout the day. A lack of proper water in the body can cause dryness and irritation. Be sure your dog has easy access to clean water throughout the day.
