Signs Your Pet Needs Urgent Care
Since our beloved pets cannot speak for themselves, it's often difficult for us to know whether their condition requires immediate medical attention or not. Alarming signs like bleeding or collapsing might indicate that your pet requires urgent care, but certain life-threatening conditions don't display such threatening signs.
These most common signs require immediate medical attention:
Fainting, Collapse, Unconsciousness, or Seizure
These symptoms are potentially extremely dangerous and can indicate problems like lung issues, internal bleeding, anemia, or an internal infection. Fainting or unconsciousness usually occurs because of possible heart disease, rendering your pet unable to breathe.
Straining to Urinate or Defecate
Your pet may find it difficult to urinate or defecate because of a tumor, a neurological issue, or a bladder stone. Bladder stones can block urine from leaving the body, the pressure causing a rupture and possibly kidney failure.
Repeated Vomiting and Diarrhea
This is extremely dangerous as your pet might have ingested some toxin or developed an infection. If you see all these signs together, take your pet to the vet immediately, especially if there's blood in their stool. Bloat, which occurs when your pet's stomach fills with gas and twists on itself, restricting blood flow, can cause retching.
Inability to Stand, Wobbling, or Dragging Its Hind Legs
If your pet is dragging its legs, it could be due to a clot in the arteries that supply blood to the hind limbs. If it goes untreated for longer than a day, your pet might lose the function of its legs.
Labored Breathing, Choking, or Non Stop Coughing
Heart disease often causes breathing issues, or there might be something trapped in your pet's trachea that prevents them from breathing. Coughing also indicates a deadly, infectious disease called tracheobronchitis. If your pet is coughing up blood, take them to a vet as soon as possible!
If your pet is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, it's time to find out if they need urgent care. Furthermore, if your pet experiences symptoms that are not on the list, call the veterinarians regardless.
