Why You Should Brush Your Dog's Teeth Regularly

One way to increase your dog’s wellbeing and health is by brushing their teeth on a daily basis. By setting aside a time each day to brush your pooch’s teeth, you increase their oral hygiene and decrease the chances of bacteria infecting their mouth and other parts of their body.

Dental hygiene is an overlooked but critical aspect to your dog’s health. Many times, owners may simply give the dog a dental chew or other chew toy and think that it’s enough for their dental needs, but it doesn’t truly get the excess food and other particles from the depths of the dog’s mouth. When excess food and bacteria accumulates in the mouth, it eventually turns into a hard substance called tartar that can cause serious problems in the gums, teeth, and jaw. The bacteria can even travel to other parts of the body and lead to liver and heart disease.

When brushing your dog’s teeth, first start by getting into a comfortable position for both you and your pup. Be sure to get dog toothpaste since toothpaste for humans may contain ingredients that are toxic for dogs. Next, get a dog toothbrush with soft bristles that you can either slip over your fingertips or can be easily held. When you begin brushing your dog’s teeth, start off gentle and go in circular motions starting from the back of their teeth and going around the mouth. Target any areas where there is an accumulation of plaque or tartar, and gently brush the gums as well. The gums are a sensitive area and applying too much pressure can cause the gums to bleed, but brushing the gums is important to maintain oral health. After you are done brushing your dog’s teeth, give them a dental chew as a reward. Incorporating this into your daily routine is the best way to stay consistent. For example, after your dog’s morning walk could be a great time to brush their teeth.
